Estate Planning

If you have worked hard all your life to provide for your family or build a business, it only makes sense to take steps to preserve your legacy. All that you have carefully built could be lost if you fail to plan. Most people understand this on some level, yet roughly two-thirds of Americans do not have any kind of estate plan. We want to fix that.

There are many reasons people fail to make an estate plan. They may not think that they have enough assets to warrant making a will or trust. They may think their family will know and carry out their wishes. Or they may simply be busy and put it off for another time—until suddenly, there is no time left.

At Doré Rothberg Law, P.C., our estate planning attorneys are committed to making the process easier and more comfortable for our clients, so that they and their families can have security and peace of mind.

Estate Planning Attorneys Serving Houston and Fort Worth

At Doré Rothberg, our attorneys begin the estate planning process by simply getting to know you, explaining your options, and only then customizing an estate plan that meets your unique needs and the needs of your family.

Depending on your circumstances, your estate plan might include:

  • Last Will and Testament, which dictates the distribution of assets and nominates an executor for your estate and, if necessary, a guardian for your minor children.
  • Durable Financial Power of Attorney, which designates someone to handle your financial affairs if you become unable to.
  • Medical Power of Attorney and other advance directives, which designate someone to make medical decisions on your behalf if you become incapacitated, and express your wishes regarding medical care.
  • Revocable Living Trust, which allows you to use and control your property during your life and avoid probate after your death.
  • Pour-Over Will, which works together with a living trust; if you have any assets outside the trust at your death, this document “pours” them into the trust
  • Special Needs Trust or Supplemental Needs Trust. This tool allows you to plan for a loved one’s future needs, care, and expenses, while also ensuring that your loved one maintains their governmental support and benefits.
  • Declaration of Guardian for Minor Children, which nominates a person to serve as your children’s guardian if your will does not do so.
  • Business succession plan, which creates a roadmap for the continuation of your business after your death.

These are some of the most common components of a Texas estate plan. Depending on your assets and family situation, we can explore various other options to best achieve your planning goals.
